10 Best Video Game Collections Money Can Buy

Updated on

As the gaming industry continues to push the boat out and publish finer experiences, those price tags only seem to be getting bulkier; to the point where a single game could eventually cost an arm and a leg. Sadly, it's only a matter of time before paying triple figures will only bag you a single video game. And that's hard — especially if your pockets are running dry and you don't make quadruple figures every calendar month.

Fortunately, developers have always been sweet enough to bundle up a series in an entire collection. Whether it be a duo pack or an entire library of works; video game collections can and do come in impressive sizes. Plus, they can save us hundreds on additional purchases and keep us busy for weeks — if not months. But which collections are worthy of the price tag, and more importantly — which are enough to make us want to stick to the same franchise for the whole journey? Well, it just so happens that we've located the ten finest packs that money can buy. And, you might even have a few pennies left over, too.

10. Mafia: Trilogy (PlayStation 4, Xbox One)

Mafia: Trilogy is available on Xbox One & PS4.

Throwing us back to the masterpiece gangster franchise that once held some of the best story-driven gameplay on the ex-gen consoles, Mafia comes clean with the whole trilogy plus all additional DLC. That's three outstanding core games as well as six DLC campaigns, and even a few bonuses, too. So, for less than forty dollars, you've got yourself almost a hundred hours of quality gaming with gripping narratives, incredible character development, fast-paced action and a whole spool of dark secrets.

The Mafia Trilogy is far more than a rehash of ex-gen editions, too. In fact, the original Mafia chapter has been entirely remade and polished to resemble everything the PlayStation 2 version possessed — but with a million extra details that make the game just as unique. And, if you're after an experience that is all story — then you can't turn down the opportunity to pick up one of the greatest timelines of video games ever made. This is a must for any action-adventure gamer.

9. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (PlayStation 4)

Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is available exclusively on PlayStation 4.

During the golden age of PlayStation 3 gaming, there were a select few masterpieces that Sony adored and continued to promote. Uncharted, of course, was one of the few that performed so well that Sony just had to keep it at the top of their podium. And now, thanks to Naughty Dog and the success of the fourth instalment, Uncharted went on to produce The Nathan Drake Collection, which consists of the first three chapters in their entirety.

Uncharted has always given players a reason to fork over their pennies — even for the standalone experiences. With enough nailbiting action, bullet storms and mystical madness; Uncharted has always stood as the kingpin to PlayStation adventure gaming. Similar to the likes of Tomb Raider, only with a bit more personality and a dash of humour, Uncharted is a gem that cannot go unseen. There's an adventure in every playable moment, and a whole world to explore in the palms of your hands. And, for less than twenty dollars, you can experience Nathan Drake's entire journey before retirement. You'd be mad not to.

8. BioShock: The Collection (Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch)

BioShock: The Collection is available on Xbox One & PS4.

Shaking things up with a dose of steampunk is the BioShock Collection, with its three immersive horror classics. Also, thanks to the generosity of 2K, this value for money collection includes all additional DLC from all three games. That's two extra games in itself, as well as a directors commentary, a making-of BioShock clipping, and a few bonus add-ons that'll keep any player immersed in the experience for plenty of hours.

Again, as other entry lists have shown; this isn't just a rehash of the ex-gen titles. BioShock and BioShock 2 were completely remastered for this specific collection, and so can be played like two whole new games. That's three massive adventures that will keep you plugging for days. Just don't bother the Big Daddy on your descent into Rapture.

7. Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far (PlayStation 4)

There could be thousands of hours in this all-in-one Kingdom Hearts package.

Ramping the content up by a whole degree is Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far package, which includes nine massive segments. From enormous Disney-fuelled video games to three-hour movies crammed with all the lore one should need to catch up; this collection gives the player the whole Kingdom Hearts experience. And you can bet there is far more to this story than Mickey Mouse and a giant key. But you better buckle in — because there is a whole heap of madness that goes down over nine huge waves.

Kingdom Hearts has always relied on a fairly complex story that, at times, can feel a little overwhelming. But it is the very characters and crossovers that keep all players hungering for more. And, with nine adventures to be thrown into, you can guarantee that this collection will leave you feeling satisfied.

6. Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection (PlayStation 4, Xbox One)

Hands down one of the best trilogies in the Assassin's Creed universe.

Often being referred to as the greatest timeline in the Assassin's Creed franchise, this collection manages to gift-wrap all three most respected games in one tidy package. With the rise of Ezio Auditore, Assassin's Creed fans can experience the journey in full as the small-town troublemaker climbs to the rank of master assassin. Plus, with a more well-rounded appearance to the ex-gen classics, these Assassin's Creed titles make up for the few minor flaws that once burdened the originals.

Assassin's Creed is one of the biggest video game franchises on the planet, and it only made sense for Ubisoft to start bundling their favourites up. And, seeing as fans clearly swayed more towards the Ezio timeline, it sort of made sense for it to be put in one juicy box for all players to enjoy ten times over. You can't get any better than that.

5. Rare Replay (Xbox One)

It's not very often you can get thirty games for twenty dollars!

If you're running low on funds and haven't got a cash flow for a few weeks, then this ultimate collection is probably you're best chance at killing time. Thanks to Rare Replay on Xbox One, gamers can enjoy thirty classics from the Rare portfolio, and even tuck in to all the bonus content that pans out over many of the featured titles, too. From Conkers Bad Fur Day to Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark to Viva Pinata; this mega bundle brings a little something to everyone — no matter your genre preference.

Rare has shared a rather diverse catalogue of games over their thirty-plus years, and are known for their genre-hopping like no other developer around. That means that no matter your poison — Rare probably has a remedy for it. Or, should you be in the market to try something different, then again — Rare probably has it. They just have everything, alright?

4. Halo: The Master Chief Collection (Xbox One)

The face of Xbox gaming comes in hard with an impressive bundle of classics.

Halo has boasted an impressive twenty years of powerful story-telling over a whole timeline of best-selling classics. Even after countless spin-offs, remasters and crossovers; Halo still reaches spectacular figures and continues to show other developers how it's done. And now, showing a generous side, Bungie has decided to package some of the biggest chapters in the saga in to one enormous bundle.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection consists of six epic games, as well as all the juicy content that will keep you going strong for months. So, you could say that this is the ultimate anthology to the award-winning franchise that Xbox gamers just can't get enough of. So, yes — it is worth picking up.

3. Borderlands: Legendary Collection (Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4)

Bag three times the madness for one small price with the Borderlands: Legendary Collection.

The loot-and-shoot favourite that has brought endless hours of fun and replayability comes in with the ultimate package. Available as a digital download for as little as twenty dollars, this extreme collection consists of Borderlands, Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, as well as all the little goodies from every game. That's a whole tonne of content for one teeny price tag. There's an entire saga of madness and co-operative gameplay that makes us feel as if we're the ones robbing the developer. But, you know — we won't complain.

Apart from Borderlands 3, this collection serves up the rest of the franchise on a silver platter. With enhanced editions, additional material and concept art, this is the package that every Gearbox fan has to own.

2. Crash Bandicoot: N Sane Trilogy (Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch)

Why buy one remaster when you can grab three?

As if bringing back everybody's favourite PlayStation 1 platformer wasn't enough, eh? Now, Naughty Dog has chosen to resurrect the entire old library and remaster everything for one convenient package. That's three games for the price of one. Three Crash Bandicoot games, might I add? In a stunning shift of appearance, these Naughty Dog classics have been polished like never before, and serve up just as much enjoyment as the nineties hits.

Fans had spent years clutching at straws over the revival of the Crash Bandicoot series, but the triple-A developer never let a single teaser slip. Until, of course — they did. Thanks to the power of millions, our beloved bandicoot was taken back to the drawing board and thrown through a modern transformer. And now, after years of hard work, the fan favourite has returned in one mighty trilogy that ticks all the right boxes.

1. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy (Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch)

Spyro: Reignited Trilogy packs in a boatload of content that makes the price tag feel worthy.

The Spyro: Reignited Trilogy bundles up the original PlayStation chapters that captured the hearts of millions and lights them up in a new wondrous glow. With jaw-dropping visuals and a roster of nostalgic characters, this collection resurrects everybody's favourite purple protagonist and steals the spotlight. Even with rival platformer Crash back on the big screen; this Spyro collection provides just as many reasons to venture back and play all over again.

Spyro once dominated the PlayStation market — especially in the platform genre. So, once Crash Bandicoot entered the room with a new bucket of remasters, it was only a matter of time before Spyro dropped the flag and backed his origins, too. And, although very different in concept, there is still one unmissable similarity between the two — and that's the bargain price tag.
